Provision of TBT Notifications

  • The Central Secretariat notifies the WTO/TBT Secretariat of any changes to technical regulations or conformity assessment procedures arising from the establishment or amendment of laws.
  • Since the establishment of the WTO in 1995, Members have reported total of 8,774 cases, while Korea has reported 258 cases.

Response to Foreign technical Regulations

  • In order to review and respond to WTO Member notifications concerning technical regulations that are forwarded by the WTO/TBT Secretariat, the Korean inquiry point (Korean Agency for Technology and Standards) operates the TBT Management Committee consisting of experts from government agencies, research institutes and universities, and a working committee whose members include specialists from relevant agencies, organizations and industries.
  • It also swiftly forwards WTO/TBT notifications to interested parties in Korea, and operates an automatic TBT notification alert service to efficiently gather opinions online.
Response to Foreign technical Regulations

Operating an Inquiry Point

  • In accordance with Articles 10.1 and 10.2 of the WTO/TBT Agreement, the Korean government is operating three inquiry points each responsible for different field. They are responsible for offering answers to TBT-related inquiries from other Member countries and providing relevant documents concerning proposed or adopted technical regulations, standards or conformity assessment procedures.
  • By promptly informing interested parties in Korea of the details of notifications submitted by each Member to the WTO Secretariat, the Central Secretariat encourages the formulation of appropriate response. - By closely reviewing technical regulations and standards associated with such notifications for any breach of the TBT Agreement, the Central Secretariat presents opinions or conveys objections to the other country or raises it as a public issue in the WTO/TBT Committee.
